If all you want for the holidays is a great smile, then there are a few things you should keep in mind this season!  Keep emergency trips to the dentist off your list this year with these oral health holiday tips!

Don't crack nuts with your teeth.  Nuts have become a popular post holiday meal snack, and while they are rich in protein, too many can actually harm your teeth.  Avoid cracking the hard shells with your teeth, this can result in a chipped tooth and even gum damage!

Pass on chewy treats.  Sticky candies found on holiday treat platters cling to tooth enamel, encourage tooth decay, and can even yank out fillings. 

Avoid opening packages with your teeth.  This goes for bottle too! We know how difficult it can be to open that bottle of soda or water.  Using your teeth is not the answer! This can result in cracked teeth and an otherwise unnecessary repair procedure. 

Bring a toothbrush.  If you are traveling this holiday season or celebrating at a family members house, bring a toothbrush.  This will help keep plaque from forming and reduce acid production in your mouth.

Avoid too many desserts.  Too much sugar not only affects your waistline, it causes major damage to your teeth.  Prevent tooth decay by limiting your intake of sweets and brushing between courses.

Could Poor Dental Health Trigger Memory Loss?

Could poor dental health trigger memory loss? Studies have found that tooth loss and bleeding gums may be factors in loss of thinking skills among middle-aged people.

The study consisted of the analysis of teeth and gums among participants with varying mouth conditions.  Researchers found that the scores on memory and thinking tests were lower among those who had fewer teeth.  Likewise, a person with no teeth scored significantly lower than a person with teeth. 

There are many theories behind these initial findings.  Oral health could be caused by a poor diet, thus eliminating antioxidants in healthy foods that promote cognitive excellence.  Or it could be as simple as a loss of memory and thinking skills results in a loss to remember to care for ones teeth.   Researchers are still working to determine specific causes and effects but until a definitive answer is reached, we must put extra emphasis on maintaining oral health.

Whether it's a single missing tooth or an entire jaws worth of teeth, the NobelGuide has become an invaluable implant treatment tool for all dentists. The NobelGuide gives insight and confidence when making important decisions prior to oral surgery. We at Jurim Dental Studio will provide you with a diagnostic tooth set-up representing optimal placement of the final desired restoration to be evaluated intra-orally.

Once it’s been optimized, the lab will then duplicate it into a radiographic guide with radio-opaque markers. With this scanning appliance seated intra-orally, your patient will have a CB scan made and then a second scan of the radiographic guide alone will be completed. Both the patient’s scan and that of the radiographic guide are then digitized and overlayed to allow for prosthetically-driven digital surgical planning with a software like NobelClinician.

Pre-surgical digital planning allows for identification, marking, and avoidance of important anatomic structures and the implants are virtually placed in the position best for the desired future prosthesis. Based on this digital surgical plan, a surgical guide is made to ensure precise, minimally-invasive implant surgery with the implants predictably placed in their exact desired position.
