March Madness is a sports lovers dream. Starting tomorrow, college basketball teams across the country will begin the championship race. Anything can happen when the steaks are high and the winner takes all; truly exemplifying "madness". To celebrate the beginning of March Madness, we've gathered some crazy and fun dental facts. Check out the following:
  1. The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime.
  2. Keep your toothbrush far away from the toilet. Airborne particles from the flush can travel up to 6 feet!
  3. People who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have 62% more tooth decay, fillings, and tooth loss than those who don't. Replace 2 glasses with water.
  4. While the most common use of dental floss is to clean in-between the teeth, in 1994 a prison inmate braided dental floss into a rope, scaled the prison wall, and escaped.
  5. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Bacteria can implant themselves on toothbrush bristles, thus contaminating your mouth.
  6. Recent poll results show that health professionals were among the most trusted people in the United States.
  7. Three out of four people in the United States suffer from some form of gum disease. For people over the age of 35, it is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Brushing Teeth: There's An App For That

The ever-evolving technological world just took a turn into the oral healthcare industry. Procter & Gamble Co will release the world's first smartphone-connected toothbrush in June. The device will be sold under the Oral-B brand and will give personalized advice to assist people in their oral care routine. Furthermore, the toothbrush has a Bluetooth 4.0 that can link to a smartphone app. Through the app, a dentist can program reminders and advice to treat neglected areas of the mouth.

The toothbrush, which will be unveiled in the coming days, is another step in the colliding worlds of health and technology. It is joined by apps that measure a persons calorie intake, sleep patterns, and daily exercise.

The toothbrush app will help assure that people are brushing effectively and efficiently; hitting all the necessary spots and guaranteeing people brush for the recommended 2 minutes.

Valentine's Day Candy Affects More Than The Waistline

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and many of us are getting ready to celebrate with our sweetheart.  When we think of showing our love, two things come to mind: diamonds and chocolate.  The heart-shaped boxes stocked with delicious chocolate treats are purchased by more than 35 million Americans each year! People normally worry about what eating the entire box will do to the waistline, but rarely ever is there a concern on the impact these sweets have on our teeth.  Check out the following effects:

Bacteria attacks teeth.  When the bacteria in your mouth come in contact with the sugar you eat, acid is produced.  This acid then begins to attack your teeth for at least 20 minutes!  Further, the cavity causing bacteria thrives on sweets and sugars which break down enamel and the inner layer of your tooth, causing tooth decay and leading to cavities.

Sticky candies cause havoc!  What's better than caramel filled chocolates?  While we agree that these treats are delicious, they are also problematic for our teeth.  Sticky candy substances take longer to dissolve, leaving the sugar to wreak more havoc on your teeth. Also, when eating sticky candies you are putting your fillings at risk of being sucked out.

Enjoy your candy while increasing your oral care.  It is perfectly fine to enjoy your chocolate candies during the holiday as long as you maintain proper care of your teeth.  Brushing and flossing an extra time each day may help prevent the sugar from damaging your teeth severely.  Visit your dentist and schedule regular cleanings and exams to assure your teeth are protected.

The Super Bowl is just days away.  Are you ready for the big game?  A Super Bowl party relies on two things: good snacks and great football.  However, not all snacks are created equal and as the saying goes "you are what you eat," when it comes to teeth, "you are what you chew."  Keep this in mind when you're deciding what snacks to chow down on.  There are actually certain foods that naturally whiten, brighten, and defend your teeth against bacteria.  Ditch the chips and opt for one of the following foods:
  1. Pineapples: can help whiten teeth and act as a natural stain remover.
  2. Ginger: supports healthy mouth tissue by acting as an inflammatory.
  3. Carrots: promote healthy tooth enamel and contain vitamin A.
  4. Basil: reduces bacteria in the mouth.
  5. Cheese: helps to buffer acid in the mouth.  It is also a good source of protein.
  6. Sesame Seeds: help to scrub away plaque build up on teeth.
  7. Shitaki Mushrooms: contain a compound that inhibits bacteria from growing in the mouth.
  8. Onions: reduce bacteria and tooth decay.
  9. Salmon: provides vitamin D which is needed for strong bones.
  10. Broccoli: protects the enamel on your teeth.
