March Madness is a sports lovers dream. Starting tomorrow, college basketball teams across the country will begin the championship race. Anything can happen when the steaks are high and the winner takes all; truly exemplifying "madness". To celebrate the beginning of March Madness, we've gathered some crazy and fun dental facts. Check out the following:

1. The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime.
2. Keep your toothbrush far away from the toilet. Airborne particles from the flush can travel up to 6 feet!
3. People who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have 62% more tooth decay, fillings, and tooth loss than those who don't. Replace 2 glasses with water.
4. While the most common use of dental floss is to clean in-between the teeth, in 1994 a prison inmate braided dental floss into a rope, scaled the prison wall, and escaped.
5. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Bacteria can implant themselves on toothbrush bristles, thus contaminating your mouth.
6. Recent poll results show that health professionals were among the most trusted people in the United States.
7. Three out of four people in the United States suffer from some form of gum disease. For people over the age of 35, it is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Tooth decay: Tooth decay occurs when plaque builds up and lingers on the teeth for too long. We are all prone to cavities, but children and older adults have the highest risk. To prevent cavities from forming, brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste every day.

Gum disease: Gum disease has the potential to be dangerous to a person's general health. It occurs when a bacterial infection caused by plaque attacks the gums, bones, and ligaments in the mouth. The earliest stage is called gingivitis. Good oral hygiene is imperative to preventing such disease. See a dentist regularly to catch signs of gum disease early.

Tooth infection: These infections occur when the pulp inside the tooth becomes damaged or infected as a result of decay or injury. If you have a deep cavity or cracked tooth, you are susceptible to bacteria entering the canal. If you are experiencing pain in or around a tooth, visit your dentist.
